The NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals (WUMP) course is a nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to medical emergencies in remote settings. This five-day, 48-hour course is ideal for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physicians, and other medical professionals. The course will upgrade EMTs to WEMTs and all others to Wilderness First Responders in accordance with the current standards in wilderness/rural pre-hospital medicine. Special topics include wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. The focus of the program is emergency medical care in the long-term setting. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists. EMT continuing education hours and physician CMEs available.
